My Name Is Maurice Dunn. Until June 10, 1999, I was an inmate remanded to the custody of Illinois Department of Corrections. I had been so situated since 1979 for a crime that I am totally innocent of. For over 25 years I have maintained my innocence and have done everything within my limited power to prove that my family and I are suffering this nightmare because of a grave injustice. Although I am no longer imprisoned behind bars, I am not free because of the mandatory sex offender registration and continual harassment that follows such a conviction.

I am an African American Male who has served an extended term of 40 years in prison for a rape I did not commit. The victim was a white female. I had neither known nor seen the victim until it was time for trial.

I Had 2 Trials. The first one lasted 6 days and ended in a hung jury. Another attorney was retained for the 2nd trial. He took 3 days to prepare my defense. He filed a motion for continuance stating that he didn't have sufficient time to prepare because he had a civil case scheduled for trial on the same day as mine. He forgot to argue this motion. This 2nd trial lasted 3 hours. I found out recently that this lawyer was a non-criminal attorney.
bulletI was taken to 7 different police stations before being charged
bulletMy arrest was ruled illegal
bulletThe highly suggestive lineup was not allowed in court, I was made to remove my pants and open my jacket, leaving me bare-chested and in gym shorts, while the others were fully clothed.
bulletContrary to the arresting officers original claims, there was no arrest or search warrant and yet my home was searched and no evidence found
bulletNeither of the 2 juries contained any African Americans

I Had No Prior Felony Convictions, nor did I have any history of sexual misconduct or assault, which left no basis for an extended term of 40 years imprisonment. Within these 26 years, my wife and I have fought this case financially as far as we are able. We've given our all in this battle for my freedom.

Sexual Assaults Of The Same Type were still occurring in the area after my arrest. I have strong documented reasons to believe that the person who actually committed this crime is now in custody on other sexual assault cases. See Who Really Did It? With assistance we could better bring this to light.

My Wife And I have been married 27 years. With the stigma this case brings and the laws that are mandatory for paroled sex offenders, to be associated with this incident is an extension of the injustices we have already endured. It is difficult enough to regain my balance in society without this reproach and harassment. See Not Free

I Received An Appellate Court decision of reversal and remand dated June 22, 1999. This ruling set a precedent as the first time that an appellate court has ordered a case back to the trial court level for DNA testing.  Since the 6/22/99 Appellate Court decision, I had several court dates in pursuit of obtaining the granted DNA testing. Each resulted in more continuances because of failure to find the evidence. The evidence never left the state's custody. Some evidence had been located, yet relevant evidence such as the Vitullo kit which is needed to conduct the DNA testing, is missing. On July 11, 2001, the issue regarding DNA testing was 'dismissed without prejudice' because of lack of evidence in the crime lab to test against.

For Further Information regarding the case, please contact me at reesedunn@hotmail.com. I have submitted a clemency request to the Governor. I am in the process of trying to obtain Dr. Farwell's services of Brain Fingerprinting www.brainfingerprinting.com. I have been in contact with a representative there, but will need an order from the court for the acceptance of this test and for the funds to acquire it. I will need a motion to be drawn up to this effect. Our objective in presenting this information at this time is to give awareness, as well as gain support and any assistance in this endeavor, with the hopes that I may be exonerated ASAP by way of proving my innocence. See How You Can Help.

Thank You.
